If You Can Dream Foundation
In Loving Memory

Masako Martha Kawaguchi Onishi
October 13, 1934 - September 13, 2021
From Robert Onishi: My mother passed away Monday after a long decline due to dementia, and then a shorter struggle with cancer. Much of the family was fortunate to spend a few hours Saturday with her, sharing our company and even singing a few hymns as a group.
Mom was always a positive, graceful force in our lives. She met Dad when she was studying Music Education at the UW, and her talent and love of music might be one of the most obvious gifts to all of us. Her more important legacy is that she leaves eight really wonderful grandchildren in an enduring family structure. I am glad that her suffering is done, and I know we'll all be together again someday.
In love and faith, always.

From Naomi Iwate Sanchez:
My fondest memories of my Aunt Martha was when she played with my cousins when they were toddlers. She would laugh with them and watch them with a big smile. Then I remember seeing her at a grade school helping the students in primary grades when I was interning at Head Start.
At family events she would help in the kitchen and most important she would sing. She was amazing! And then her humming - you could hear from a far.
Kind and thoughtful she was. Her influence in these moments remain with me and I think of them now.
Love,
Naomi Iwata Sanchez
From Rev. Dr. Carol Mariano:
It was such a joy for me to know Martha, to hear her lovely voice singing beside me at the Jubilate Summer Festival for so many years. My thoughts and prayers are with her family as you grieve her loss and as you remember fondly sweet spirit and generous heart.
Love,
Carol Mariano
From Ricardo, Jacquie and Nicole Haragutchi: Masa changed my life when she visited us in Brazil in the 1970's. She showed me how important is the link that we have between our families. She also changed my life again in the 1980's when I visited the Kawaguchi Family in Seattle. I stayed part of the time with Masa and Kenji who showed me a completely different way of life which made me decide to move to the United States. It took one more decade but in the 1990's I finally moved and started my life all over again on the country that Masa, Kenji and the whole Kawaguchi family introduced me to. Masa, I thank you very much for the teachings you provided me that changed my life. My sincere condolences to the Onishi and Kawaguchi families. I know Masa will be missed for everything she was to all of us.
